Brief History of Trench Cage / Shoring

We set out to find the history of Trench Cages. There is disappointingly little information on the beginnings of Trench Cages or Trench Shields. We dug pages into Google and could only find a short history.

Trench Shoring has its roots in the Dark Ages, after the fall of the Roman Empire and was used repeatedly in wars through the centuries.

A form of trench cages may have been used in wars, but for the most part all the information we could find on trench cages was in the last 50 years.

The first mention we could find of Trench Cages in the USA was Efficiency Production (Arcosa) selling them, starting in 1970.

In 1989 OSHA passed trench protection requirements and the trench cage became more common.

Throughout the next few decades several different styles of trench cages were created. They range from heavy metal trench cages to small lightweight options.

EasyDig was founded in 2020 and is the smallest trench shield available that is engineered and patented. We aim to make trench cages more common and to alter the path of history to include a small and easy to use option.

There is no excuse today, to fail to provide protection to your workers, when trench cages are small enough to move around by hand in the back of a pickup truck.

Let us know if you have further history on Trench Cages. We would be interested to know more.
